Terms of Service

Effective April 1, 2026

WhyDoIOwe is software that performs estimates based on the information you enter and current IRS withholding tables. It is not a law firm, CPA firm, tax preparation service, or enrolled agent service. No professional-client relationship is created by using the site or purchasing a report. You are solely responsible for reviewing your inputs, deciding whether to submit any Form W-4 or estimated payment, and consulting a licensed professional for advice tailored to your situation.

What WhyDoIOwe is

WhyDoIOwe is a tax withholding diagnostic tool. It estimates the gap between what your employers withhold and what you will owe the IRS. It generates W-4 adjustment instructions to help close that gap.

What WhyDoIOwe is not

WhyDoIOwe is not a tax preparer, CPA, or licensed tax advisor. Our calculations are estimates based on the data you provide and current IRS tax brackets. They do not account for every possible deduction, credit, or tax situation.

WhyDoIOwe does not file your taxes. WhyDoIOwe does not guarantee a specific tax outcome. Always consult a qualified tax professional for complex situations.

Your account

  • You must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
  • You are responsible for the accuracy of the data you enter (employer names, gross pay, withholding amounts).
  • You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure.
  • One account per person. Do not share account access.

Free and paid features

The Federal tax gap calculator is free and requires no account. Paid features (Tax-Year Pass, Monitor) are described on the pricing page.

  • W-4 Withholding Report ($19): one-time payment. Includes per-employer breakdown, printable W-4 adjustment details, and paycheck impact preview. Access through April 2027.
  • Monitor ($79/year): annual subscription. Includes everything in the Tax-Year Pass plus gap change alerts, quarterly check-ins, and auto-rollover.

Payments

All payments are processed securely by Stripe. By purchasing a paid plan, you agree to pay the listed price at the time of checkout.

Monitor subscriptions renew annually. You can cancel anytime from your billing page. See our Refund Policy for details on cancellations and refunds.

Accuracy and limitations

WhyDoIOwe estimates are based on current IRS tax brackets and standard deduction amounts. Results depend on the accuracy of the data you provide. Actual tax liability may differ due to:

  • Itemized deductions or credits we do not model.
  • State and local taxes (not currently calculated).
  • Changes in income, jobs, or filing status mid-year.
  • IRS rule changes after our data was last updated.

Limitation of liability

WhyDoIOwe is provided “as is.” We make no warranties about the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of our calculations. We are not liable for any tax penalties, interest, underpayments, or overpayments that may result from using WhyDoIOwe.

Our total liability to you for any claim related to WhyDoIOwe is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Prohibited use

Do not:

  • Use WhyDoIOwe to file fraudulent tax documents.
  • Scrape, reverse-engineer, or resell WhyDoIOwe data or features.
  • Create multiple accounts to circumvent usage limits.
  • Attempt to access other users' data.

Termination

You can delete your account at any time by emailing us. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.

Changes

We may update these terms. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or a notice on the site. Continued use of WhyDoIOwe after changes means you accept the updated terms.
