What we collect

When you use WhyDoIOwe, we collect only the information needed to calculate your tax withholding gap and generate a W-4 withholding report.

  • Account info: email address and authentication data when you create an account.
  • Job data: employer names, gross pay, pay frequency, and withholding amounts you enter.
  • Pay stub images: if you use the OCR feature, we process your pay stub image to extract withholding data. Images are not stored after processing.
  • Payment info: Stripe handles all payment processing. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Usage data: basic analytics (pages visited, features used) to improve the product.

How we use your data

  • Calculate your withholding gap and generate W-4 instructions.
  • Send tax alerts when your gap changes (if you opt in).
  • Process payments through Stripe.
  • Improve WhyDoIOwe features and fix bugs.

We do not sell your data. We do not share your financial information with advertisers. Your tax data is yours.

Data storage and security

Your data is stored in Supabase (hosted on AWS) with row-level security. Every database query is scoped to your user ID. No other user can access your data.

All connections use HTTPS/TLS encryption. Pay stub images processed via OCR are sent over encrypted connections to Azure Document Intelligence and are not retained after extraction.

Third-party services

  • Supabase: authentication and database hosting.
  • Stripe: payment processing. Subject to Stripe's Privacy Policy.
  • Azure Document Intelligence: OCR processing for pay stub images.
  • Vercel: application hosting.

Your rights

You can:

  • Delete your account and all associated data at any time by emailing us.
  • Export your data from the dashboard (CSV export).
  • Opt out of alert emails from your account settings.

Cookies

We use essential cookies for authentication (keeping you logged in). We do not use third-party tracking cookies or advertising pixels.

Children's privacy

WhyDoIOwe is not intended for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes

If we make significant changes to this policy, we will notify you by email or a notice on the site. Minor clarifications may be made without notice.
